The Office of Local Government is responsible for local government across NSW. The Office’s organisational purpose is to ‘Strengthen Local Government’ and its organisational outcome is ‘Fit for the future councils leading strong communities’.
The Office has a policy, legislative, investigative and program focus in matters ranging from Local Government finance, infrastructure, governance, performance, collaboration and community engagement. The Office strives to work collaboratively with the Local Government sector and is the key adviser to the NSW Government on Local Government matters.

New Powers put Brakes on Bad Bike Operators
Councils and other impounding authorities now have expanded powers to manage shared bicycles on public land that cause obstructions, pose safety risks or are left unused in one place for too long based on clear, risk-based time limits.

The NSW Government is encouraging local communities to celebrate the successes of female councillors and staff at local councils across the State by calling for nominations for the 2019 Minister’s Awards for Women in Local Government.
Service NSW can now Register Dogs and Cats
Dog and cat owners across the State are able to register their pets through Service NSW, as well as at their local council, Animal Welfare League, Cat Protection Society or online at the NSW Pet Registry.
